Freedom From Addictions
For many years as an unbeliever, the beginning of every year brings hope of change or resolutions designed to help me become a better person. A fresh start and a clean slate create the right environment to break old habits and create new ones. When people think of addictions, alcohol, drug abuse and sexual sins are often the first things that come to mind. However, addictions come in different forms, shapes and sizes.
Many Christians are struggling to break addictive strongholds in their lives and have become frustrated as they go through the process over and over again. The Good News is: there is hope! Anyone can obtain freedom through a relationship with Jesus Christ and correctly applying His principles in their lives.
A Dictionary defines addiction as a behaviour in which someone chooses “to obsessively or habitually surrender to something.” Addictions can take the form of an obsessive way of thinking, speaking or acting.
Addictions are the result of thoughts that are unchecked by the Word of God. A man of God once said “every outcome you experience in life follows a sequence that begins with words and leads to thoughts, feelings, decisions, actions then habits”. I strongly believe and agreed with him on this. If you find there is an area of your life that seems to be out of control, it is important to locate what words you have been listening to. Then you must deal with the thoughts created by those words that have been allowed to influence your actions. If you don’t deal with this critical area of your thought life (this is very important), you will remain in bondage to addictive behaviours.
I am a great believer that one way to effectively deal with negative thinking is to first allow the Word of God to become your final authority. We must find out what God says in His Word; and then make a quality decision to align our words and thoughts with His. Then we will be able to recognize opposing thoughts and suggestions that flood our minds. This I believe is the first step toward your freedom.
The next step to breaking addictions is to use the Word as a weapon against those negative thoughts, which form your behaviour. The Word of God admonishes us to cast down thoughts and every imagination that want to nullify the Word of God you know to be true (2 Corinthians 10: 5). We do this by speaking out the Word of God, (not murmuring it) as soon as the thought comes, we speak out the Word. As we declare what God has said about the issue we are dealing with, we capture wrong thoughts and keep our mind free and clear of the devil’s lies.
What I considered as the third key to breaking addictions is found in Romans 12:1-2. “… but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, an perfect, will of God.” By spending time to meditate on the Word of God will transform the way you think and perceive life. The world may have told us that i.e. retaliating against someone who has hurt or wronged you is acceptable; but the Word tells us to love our enemies. If you have a habit of cussing at people who make you mad, or seeking revenge, you need to change and break that bad habit by renewing your mind with God’s Word. Slowly but surely, as you begin to think differently, your responses and reactions will change and align to God’s way and God’s Word.
God promise to you is abundant life that does not include being in bondage to any addictive thought patterns or behaviours. If you’re struggling with addictions, you’re not going to be able to model the character and love of God effectively, because addictions are based in selfishness.
If you are struggling in a particular area, don’t be afraid to admit your challenge and ask God to help you. As a child of God, you have authority, through Jesus Christ, to overcome wickedness and strongholds of any addictions. The Word says you are more than a conqueror! You can and must not only overcome your addiction but you must conquer it through the Word of God, and the power in the name of Jesus, we can remove bad habits from our life and prevent them from coming back.
The Word of God says “In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off]” (Galatians 5:1 Amplified Bible). When you release yourself from entanglement with addictions and obsessions, you position yourself to receive God’s peace and plan for your life.
My aim as you read this article is to encourage and challenge you to build your faith and strength by meditating on the Word of God.
God’s plan for your life is to live an overcoming life, to live it to the full until it’s over flows. If you are not free from your addiction, the only reason is that you are not applying the Holy Word of God in your life. Your are not living the Kingdom principles. For this purpose Jesus died on the cross so you can LIVE free from bondage of any kind. He said, “…I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it [b]overflows)” (John 10:10 Amplified Bible).
